The Cathy Jan was built in Port Adelaide by the Kali Shipyard for the purpose of prawn trawling. She operated out of Venus Bay on the west coast of Eyre Peninsula, and fished the surrounding Commonwealth waters. After that the vessel was involved in shark fishing and leatherjacket trapping. Further to that the Cathy Jan was kept in survey and used as a charter boat operating out of Port Neil.

Now, Cathy Jan has been upgraded to 2C Survey and licensed to take up to 10 passengers and 2 crew on charter from her home port of Tumby Bay.
